Saint-Tropez has a very old history dating back to the time of Jesus Christ.
At the beginning it was a Greek colony called Heracléa, and this name changed in AD 68 to Saint-Torpès, then Saint-Tropez.This was due to an Italian gladiator called Torpès who was the attendant to the Emperor Neron.
Torpès became a christian which meant a certain death during this period. Neron being a close friend of Torpès but he did not want to have him fed to the lions, so instead he asked him to renonce his faith. Torpès denied him and so as an example to all Christians Neron ordered that he had his head cuted off.
In addition to this, he had Torpès's head placed in the Arno River and his body in a rotten boat with a rooster and a dog. The boat went into the coast of Héracléa and miraculously, the body arrived in perfect condition, untouched by both the rooster and the dog.
The people from Héracléa, who were already Christians, saw this as a sign from God and took Torpès as their Saint and named their village in honor of him, hence the name you know today: Saint-Tropez.

Actually there are 5000 people in Saint-Tropez in winter and each day in summer there are between 100 000 and 150 000 people in Saint-Tropez.
